Learning in an Inclusive Classroom Community

This paper explores the benefits of the inclusive classroom over the concerns that this kind of learning is hindering academic growth. In The Other Side of Inclusion, Associate Professor Wade A. Carpenter presents a view of inclusion being ineffective because it overwhelms classroom teachers and causes mediocre instruction. Meanwhile, Professor Mara Sapon-Shevin believes that, if specific strategies are used, inclusion can help build a learning community that benefits all. We live in a diverse country; therefore understanding strategies to build a workable inclusive classroom is the goal.Going to school in the late 70’s to 80’s, students with special needs were placed on the other side of campus in separate buildings. This created a shroud of fear due to superstition and ignorance surrounding these students. Even though Sapon-Shevin states, â€Å"the primary justification for inclusion has traditionally resided in the belief that disabled children have a right to and c an benefit from inclusion in a regular educational environment,† I believe that the ‘regular’ classroom has the right to benefit from having a diverse learning experience as part of their education.â€Å"Research carried out by the Carnegie Institute of Technology shows that 85 percent of financial success is due to skills in ‘human engineering,’ personality, and ability to communicate, negotiate, and lead. Shockingly, only 15 percent is due to technical knowledge. † (Jensen, 2012) Knowing that success is driven by communication and the ability to understand, accept, and motivate people, having a diverse classroom is the best teacher. We as educators must first learn strategies to enable us to act as effective catalysis to initiate and sustain a diverse learning community.The first strategy addresses the teacher’s beliefs about inclusion and diversity. Sapon-Shevin (2008) explains that â€Å"in truly inclusive classrooms, teachers ackno wledge the myriad ways in which students differ from one another (class, gender, ethnicity, family background, sexual orientation, language, abilities, size, religion, and so on); value this diversity; and design and implement productive, sensitive responses. † Sapon-Shevin encourages the inclusive teacher to redefine educational tools to include more learners that fit that specific category.â€Å"For example, access can mean, Is there a ramp? But it can also mean, Will letters home to parents be written in a language they can understand? † (Sapon-Shevin 2008) Differentiated instruction includes tools that will help meet the instructional needs of different learning challenges. Having books on tape, lessons that are multi-sensory, and planning curriculum that meets the needs of different learner types is just better instruction for all students, not just ones with difficulty in a specific area.Teachers need training in positive behavior management for classrooms that pr ovide support for â€Å"community building, classroom meetings, cooperative games, and a culture of appreciation and celebration of all students† as well helping them coop with students who suffer with emotional problems. (Sapon-Shevin, 2008) Out of the many strategies Professor Sapon-Shevin provides, training teachers in facilitating discussions and handling bullying are the most needed.Students have the ability to build strong healthy learning communities if they are allowed to discuss and process the issues as they arise. Educators need to help tear down the walls that separate the many ways we differ by addressing the ways in open conversations instead of awkward silence and taboo topics. Three ways I agree with how Sapon-Shevin suggests we tackle these discussions are: teachers familiarizing themselves with the terminology, providing opportunities for class discussions of diversity, and address bullying in open discussions before it becomes an issue in the class or schoo l.First, educators need to familiarize themselves with the proper terminology to model appropriate language and to educate students to the proper terms to respectfully address people and topics. Secondly, since teachers spend the most amount of daily time with students they have the opportunity and responsibility to take the time to open up the class in honest respectful discussions to address diversity.Such discussions help educate students as they process new and diverse peoples while learning how to become effective communicators. Lastly, as educators we are bound by law to protect the rights and environment of the students under our care, which means addressing any and all teasing, bullying, or inappropriate language in our classrooms or on our campuses. The best offense is a good defense, so training the student body to be respectful in word and deed prevents the community disease of prejudice of any kind.If there should be any teasing or bullying the educator must address the subject and students involved and deal with the issue justly with the aim of atonement, restoration and healing. Using these strategies along with extensive teacher training in common core standards, we can help our students become successful adults that will be able to choose any field because they will have learned the key concepts they need, and the most important lesson of human engineering in a diverse world.

Although Nighat is educated but her role is restricted more to caring for the household than anything else and provides the mother figure role around the house. However, this does not mean that Nighat is restricted to the house alone but instead she can leave the house for shopping or visiting the doctor etc. This is in contrast to most South East Asian families, as women cannot leave the house without an accompanying male member. Nighat is also responsible for maintaining the house, shopping, attending the children’s school and for taking the children to the doctor. Nighatâ€⠄¢s son Sheryar (who is the eldest) is responsible for shopping with his mother at times. Moreover, Sheryar buys small things such as calling cards when his mother needs them. In addition, Sheryar helps Nighat to look after the smaller sibling by playing with him while Nighat prepares baby food or changes a nappy. Hence, Sheryar is in the typical role of a child in the family under discussion. Assignment of family roles occurs based on a patriarchal family structure where the male is responsible for providing for the family while the female’s role is restricted to caring for children and the household. Another factor is assigning the roles is Mahmood’s work schedule. Mahmood goes to work in the middle of the day and returns late at night so it is hard for him to deal with various functions such as shopping. Therefore, Nighat assumes these roles instead of Mahmood. Sheryar has some small roles by assigned his mother indicating a strong and coherent family structure. Mah mood finds little time to interact with the children because of his working hours. Some Sundays are on as well so Mahmood has some time off during the weekdays. That is why we see that over the years the US government shave started looking towards Israel as an integral part of its foreign, economic and armament policy and Israel’s violations of human rights and violations of agreements with Palestinians are ignored or brushed aside. (Levinson, 2008) The causes of unrest in the Middle East are historical, religious, economic and geo-political. Ancient history and ancient civilizations can serve as a framework for understanding some of the existing enmity. Iranians and the Iraqis have been fighting for more than 3,000 years. However, the current unrest in the Middle East is the result of Western ethno centrism and colonialism (covert and overt), combined with religious and sectarian conflicts. The impact of US interference in the Middle East cannot be overstated. (Hafez Kenny, 2000) Indeed, the term â€Å"Middle East† is an artificial term that has no meaning except in the context of its geographical relationship to Europe. The most active period of Western interference in the Middle East was after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and up to the present time, although there were substantial economic, military, and political interests in the Middle East for the previous two hundred years. Prior to World War I the primary interest of the Western powers in the Middle East was geo-political, mostly concerned with shipping lanes Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Suez Canal and Red Sea for military and economic gain. Following World War I, the primary interest of the US in the Middle East became oil, although Great Britain was already actively involved in the exploitation of Iranian oil as early as 1908 (Bostock, 2008). The possibility of large deposits of oil in Iraq had already been recognized prior to World War I (Siegman, 2008). Thus, the partitioning of the areas that had made up the Ottoman Empire and German colonial holdings, including Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria, following World War I had the smell of oil around it. Great Britain and France, with the support of the USA, used the League of Nations to obtain mandates, colonial power, over most of the Middle East. Unfortunately, along with the exploitation of oil came the oppression of the people of the Middle East, the results of which are evident today in the lack of democratic governments in the area. Each time a country tried to become a democracy, the implied threat of the possibility of oil being withheld from the military machines of the Western powers led to the destruction of the democratic elements and to the installation of kings and dictators that served the interests of Great Britain, France and the USA (Linklater, 2000). The distortions in policy are evident from the fact that on the one hand Israel is allowed to produce arms, become nuclear and amass weapons but this is not allowed to Iraq and rather the whole Iraqi government was invaded, toppled and destructed by US. Then enters a new dimension in the international and US foreign policies all led by US. This is the Iranians toppling the Shah of Iran and creation of an Islamic Iranian state led by Ayatollah Khomeini. Initially it was felt that with the passage of time the Iranians will be looking towards Shah for finishing the Islamic rulers. However the myth soon lost its charm as over a period of time the Islamic Iran became consolidated and their presence also started motivating the masses of other neighboring countries (Levinson, 2008). US soon realized this situation and attempts were made mobilize uprisings, than economically cripple Iran and finally direct overthrow of government. All these attempts failed. Iranian government started benefitting from these failures rather capitalized all these towards their consolidation as they started mobilizing public opinions through two slogans â€Å"Death to Israel† and â€Å"America the great Satan†. These slogans were infused into the new generations by making the Tehran University as the main hub of all demonstrations and activities. The only way left was to impose economic sanctions on Iran. US led sanctions isolated Iran but being an oil exporter it was able to circumvent the sanctions (Altunisik, Spring 2005). The hatred increased with the passage of time and Iran became more vocal against Israel as it believes that US policy was dictated by Israel and Israel should be wiped of the globe. The Iranians in order to prove their ideological war against these two counties started supporting Palestinian faction Hamas openly at war with Israel and also supported Syria and its allies in Lebanon who are against Israel (Siegman, 2008). The Iranian diplomatic moves were all against the US stand on Israel and there is a great danger that if the Iranians succeed in their diplomacy and their support makes Syria and Lebanon politically and militarily strong than there is all the likelihood that other nations in the neighborhood would soon be pressurized by their people to follow suit (Frankel, 1969). This dilemma in the US policies is a thaw which needs to be taken care of as the war between Hezbollah and Israel broke the myths about the Israeli militarily might and this is an alarming situation for the architects of US foreign policy. This situation was partially addressed by Mr. Bush who declared Iran as part of â€Å"evil nexus† and also declaring Iran as a country aspiring to become nuclear state militarily. Leadership Outcomes The phenomenal success of the â€Å"The Apprentice† is due to the person who has conceptualized the show i. e. Donald Trump. The way the show is run clearly points his personality. Impact of Internationalisation of Business Markets This report aims to analyse and discuss the internationalisation of business and global marketing issues. It also analyses the influence of global marketing environment on the marketing activities of the firm. In order to prepare this report, there has been a use of various Academic textbooks and journals. Over the past thirty years, internationalisation of the firm has been the most frequently researched topics in international marketing (Fletcher 2001). It has been used to describe the outward movement or increasing involvement in a firms or larger groupings international operations (Fillis 2000). In general, Internationalisation refers to the increasing importance of international trades, international treaties, international relations, alliances, etc. Firms undertake international operations due to various reasons (Lam and White 1999). Some internationalise due to the fact that their competitors or customers have been globalised (Ohmae, 1990), whereas others are pushed by the idea of multinationalism as a symbol of success and progress (Gerlinger et al. 1989). The firms use a stepwise approach along with an organisational continuum, in order to develop the international operations. The Uppsala School views internationalisation as having four stages while it has also been modelled with five and six. Although the number of incremental steps may differ, there is general agreement that with each subsequent step comes increasing involvement in international operations. However, due to increasing globalisation, chaotic market conditions and technology effects, it is believed that such stepwise advancement is not generally exhibited in SMEs and that alternative modelling of microenterprise behaviour is needed in order to account for emerging modes of behaviour (Fillis 2000). Definition of Internationalisation: There are many possible definitions of Internationalisation, some referring to the whole economy of the home or internationalising, country, some referring to specific sectors of the economy, and some referring to MNEs themselves (Kumar, N 1998). Calof and Beamish (1995: 116) denotes Internationalisation as the process of adapting firms operations (strategy, structure, resources, etc) to international environments. Whereas, Welch and Luostarinen (1988), Rao and Naidu (1992), Easton and Li (1993) and Johanson and Vahlne (1993) has defined internationalisation as a process by which firms increase their involvement in international business activities. From the above-proposed definitions, it can be concluded that Internationalisation is a process in which the firm gradually increases its international involvement. Complexity and challenges in Internationalisation: Internationalisation is a process which is very complex and challenging by nature. There have been various factors which have made internationalisation as a complex process. The most important factors are uncertainty in formats, formula and markets, the high degree of operational flexibility required and there need to be the high rate of formula innovation in order to get a success in internationalisation (Dawson, J. 2003). Uncertainty in Formats, Formula and Markets: As being an international market for the internationalising firm, it is very uncertain. The firm faces huge competition from the local markets. These all factors make internationalising for the firm very challenging. High degree of operational flexibility required: In order to perform a successful internationalisation process, there needs to be a high degree of operational flexibility, which will give an advantage to the internationalising firm over the local firms. Need of high rate of formula innovation: In order to gain an advantage over the local firms, the internationalising firm has to be very active in terms of innovation. As the competition will be high for the internationalising firm there needs to be a rapid innovation of the formula. Uppsala Internationalization Model: The Uppsala Internationalization Model was originally developed by Johanson and Vahlne (1977, 1990). This model, also known as the incremental theory of internationalisation, shows that enterprises gradually increase their international involvement according to the development of their knowledge about foreign markets and operations. Camuffo et al. (2007) enhanced this model by adding technological knowledge and customer-supplier interaction as important determinants of the process, stating that cross-border expansion into a neighbouring country might shorten the time required to accumulate knowledge and to control the facility in the target country (Reiner, G. 2008). The Uppsala model has described the internationalisation of a firm as a process of experiential learning and incremental commitments which lead to an evolutionary development in a foreign market. Johanson and Vahlne formulated this approach in 1977, referring to empirical observations on Swedish manufacturing firms from their studies at the international business department of Uppsala University. One of the basic assumptions of the model is that the lack of knowledge is an important obstacle to the development of international operations (Johanson Vahlne, 1977: 23). Hence, the Uppsala model has dealt fundamentally with knowledge acquisition and learning. It has been observed that the absence of market-specific knowledge has forced the many manufacturing firms to develop their international operations in small steps, undertaking incremental commitment decisions and moving at the beginning to psychically close countries in order to reduce the market uncertainty (Johanson Vahlne, 1977 : 24). Uppsala model is based on four core concepts: market commitment, market knowledge, current activities and commitment decisions. These four concepts are then divided into state aspects and change aspects. The two state aspects are market commitment, which is the resources committed to foreign markets, and market knowledge, which is the knowledge about foreign markets and operations possessed by the firm at a given time. The two change aspects are current activities and commitment decisions. The latter are the decisions to commit resources to foreign operations (Johanson Vahlne, 1990). Drawback of Uppsala Internationalisation model: The Uppsala model has been criticised for being partial and deterministic (Hollensen, S. 2007).The first criticism is based on the fact that Johanson and Vahlne 1977 rely on only one construct- experiential knowledge as one of several constructs, including the decision making process of the firms management. On the other hand, the internationalisation process model does deal with how other factors are handled in the process (Blomstermo, A. 2003). The criticism that the model is deterministic has to do with the incremental development of experiential knowledge and its manifestation in the visible stage model. Researchers provide empirical evidence that shows that firms do not always start with occasional exports and end up with a production company abroad (Newbould, Buckley and Thurwel 1978).It has also been argued that the model does not take into account interdependencies between different country markets (Johanson and Mattson, 1986) Advantages of Uppsala Internationalisation model: After analysing the Uppsala Internationalisation model it was found that there have been very few advantages. The only advantage associated with this model is that it explains the internationalisation process. In comparison to all the other models of internationalisation this has been highly criticised (Madsen, K. 1991). Macro-environment Forces: Whether its an international banking organisation, a university or a manufacturer, no organisation exists within a vacuum. It is very likely competitors, to be subject to international, national and local control, obliged to comply with national or European pollution fluctuations in the fortunes of the global economy (Brooks, I. 2004). Factors that influence a companys or products development but that are outside of the companys control. For example, the macro environment could include competitors, changes in interest rates, changes in cultural tastes, or government regulations etc (Hill, C. 2009). Macro- environmental forces influencing Internationalisation process: The various outside influence on a firms decision to go international are as follows: Export Agents Governments Chamber of commerce Banks etc. Unsolicited international orders are one major factors influence the firm to begin exporting. In United States, such orders have been found to account for more than half of all cases of export initiation by small and medium-sized firms. Another major influencing agent may actually be a competitor. Just as firms respond to competitive pressures from other companies, statements by executives from other competing firms may serve as change agents (Czinkota, M. 2007). Export Agents: Export agents as well as export management firms generally qualify as experts in global marketing. They are already dealing internationally with other exportable products, have overseas contacts and are set up to handle other exportable products, have overseas contacts and are set up to handle other exportable products. Many of these trade intermediaries approach prospective exporters directly if they think that their product have potential markets overseas (Hollensen, S. 2007). Governments: In nearly all countries governments try to stimulate international business through providing global marketing expertise (export assistance programmes). For example, government stimulation measures can have a positive influence not only in terms of any direct financial effects that they may have, but also in relation to the provision of information (Welfens, P. 2001). Chambers of commerce: Chambers of commerce and similar export production organizations are interested in stimulating international business, both exports and imports. These organizations seek to motivate individual companies to get involved in global marketing and provide incentives for them to do so on. These incentives include putting the prospective exporter or importer in touch with overseas business, providing overseas market information, and referring the prospective exporter or importer to financial institutions capable of financing global marketing activity (Hollensen, S. 2007).. Banks: Banks and other financial institutions are often instrumental in getting companies to internationalize. They alert their domestic clients to international opportunities and help them to capitalize on these opportunities. Of course, they look forward to their services being used more extensively as domestic clients expand internationally (Czinkota, M. 2007). Common Customer needs: In general, standardization is less likely with services that with goods. Within services, the potential for standardization is greater the less the provider is involved in the delivery because this increases the extent to which customer needs are likely to have more features in common. Scale Economies: These are driven by the opportunity to spread fixed costs. With services, such economies are more likely to come from standardised processes than from a physical concentration of activities (Blythe, J. 2005). Competition Drivers: These often occur because the service provider finds it necessary to go international in order to protest its position in the domestic market, especially if costs can be lowered. If the service providers do not take this step, then there is an increased risk that firms in the international market may use that market as a base from which to internationalise their operations (Toyne, B. 1989). Information Technology drivers: The ability to centralise information hubs on a global basis is a motive because it strengthens the firms competitive position. For example: Rupert Murdochs involvement in satellite TV in order to monopolise sports coverage (Brown, L. 2004). Apart from the above-mentioned drivers, there are some more drivers of internationalisation such as Revolution in information and communications systems, globalisation of financial markets and also improvements in business travel (Blythe, J. 2005). Conclusion: From the above discussion and findings, it can be concluded that Internationalisation is a process in which the firm gradually increases its international involvement. It has been also found that the internationalisation is very complex by nature. Various models of internationalisation have been proposed till date, out of which the most famous model is Uppsala approach model of internationalisation. However, it was found that there have been various drawbacks in this model such as, being partial and deterministic, not taken into account interdependencies between different country markets etc. From the discussion of the influence of various macro environmental forces on internationalisation, it can be concluded that there is an increasing number of influence on the firms to go for industrialisation.

The person will do anything they can to be noticed and appreciated. In the novel, Famous All Over Town, by Danny Santiago the main character, Chato, has many reasons to feel lonely. In almost every aspect of his life he is being let down in one way or another. He has to try to deal with a family on the brink of falling apart, he has to go to a school which doesn't teach anything "fun," and he has friends that are a bad influence on him. The novel reveals how he has to endure hardships, most of us do not have, to get through a day. By the end of the novel the reader begins to understand why Chato starts to write on buildings all over town. For most individuals the home is a safe dependable environment when the world seems to be threatening. Ideally, family members support one another. This is not the case with Chato. His home is a place where he feels the most isolated. One reason he might feel this way is because of all the secrets that are being kept in his home. What bothers Chato the most is the secret his sister, Lena, is keeping from everyone but their mother. He wants to know from his sister the identity of the man who is hiding his suitcase in their shed. She lies to Chato and tells him that the man is just a friend, but Chato finds out the truth. When he does, Lena isn't very happy with him and she says, "Your're a snot nosed metiche. Get out of my life."
